Laura, you and I met at a really fun dinner party hosted by Orlagh O'Reilly, (aka @theminipost )and we bonded straight away over my love of your gorgeous fuschia cashmere sweater, my admiration of your haircut, and our mutual love/skill at procrastinating.
Your cashmere collections are so elegant yet so wearable. You can really see the thought that goes into the desighn , the little bell or cap sleeve, the colour palettes - always feminine and always wearable -(really hard to nail the last two!!)
Lisa what a great night that was when we met ! We had such great chats about everything from hair to family to sea swimming !!
Dont you find the experience of having worked in Retail and owning your own store gives you great insight!
Absolutely working in retail and owning my own store in the past has given me a great advantage and insight into what works and does not work on women and what they want from their wardrobe. I think working on the shop floor is a really important learning curve for any potential fashion designer. Seeing first hand what sells and what does not sell and why this is the case. Is it shape, size, colour or price point ?
One thing that is very clear when working in Irish fashion retail is that Irish women love colour which is great as I do too !
I love colour but equally Im scared of it… You’ve made me braver. Whats the hardest part about being self employed for you?
The hardest part of being self employed is definitely trying to stay motivated. Im a procrastinator, a day dreamer and involved in so much in my life so keeping on track can be an issue as being self employed I dont have a boss on my case.
The other hard part is not having anyone to trash out my ideas with. Its not like I have a studio of designers and interns. Its just me, my machines, my cashmere and my notebooks of ideas. I do love this isolation but sometimes it is nice to get someone else's opinion.
I also miss the interaction with people that you get in retail. I love chatting to random people…….too much at times……so spending hours on my own working can sometimes be very quiet and a little lonely.
I stay motivated by making lists…..I have to have lists that I can tick off once Ive completed a task. This keeps me focused and puts structure on my day. Im also motivated by my creative peers especially my 2 sisters. Jenny is a wonderful ceramic artist and Emer is a fashion designer too and works for the amazing Thom Browne in New York.
Instagram when managed correctly can be a great motivator as at a swipe you can see so much creativity that is so inspirational and motivating.
There are so many wonderful creatives working all over the world and Instagram gives us such great insight into their creativity that we would otherwise be unaware of…..however, it is important to know when to stop swiping and start working !
I miss other peoples opinions also. It sounds strange when you say it.
What is your morning routine ?
My morning routine is very mundane. I get my two kids up …..Emma is 11 and Evan 8 and we get ready, have our breakfast and walk with the dog to school. This is a 25 minute walk so the round trip takes me almost an hour which is great as by 9:15 I have at least half of my daily steps in !
Two mornings a week I go swimming at the Forty Foot with the most amazing group of women. I absolutely love these mornings. We have great chats and laughs but I love the water and the swim is so important for me physically and mentally. I just feel like it presses the reset button and I am full of energy and positivity afterwards. I have you Lisa to thank for me starting swimming. It was the chat we had about open sea swimming the night we met that inspired me to do something I had always wanted to do.
Oh wow I didn’t know that! thats great. Im so delighted to hear that ,I know I bang on about it , I love it.
Next!What supplements do you take
God Im not great for taking supplements…..Im sure I should be taking them all the time. I tend to buy them …..take them for a few days and then forget to continue !
WOW Im so trying not to be a big consumer but was secretly hoping you’d have a secret elixir I could run out and buy.
You come from a working artistic family. Is it down to genetics? Do you have a mentor?
I think it must be down to genetics. Im the oldest of 3 girls and we all went to NCAD and from as far back as I can remember all of us were instinctively creative. We did'nt grow up surrounded by art and creativity. My Dad had his own building supply company and my mum was hairdresser and then a stay at home mum. So Im not sure where the creativity came from but its there in force in the 3 of us. My parents were always so supportive of our creativity and never tried to persuade us to choose another path in life instead of the “ precarious life “ we chose.
I dont have a mentor. I could definitely do with having one. I do have some great friends, a great mum and a super supportive husband whose opinions I value hugely.
Its jut so impressive to actually be able to earn a living in a creative field.
Any instagram accounts that you find inspiring lately :
At the moment I love interior design Instagram accounts. This is because I have just finished doing up our house and also just finished the interior of my husbands new office this evening !! I adore Elaine Verdon’s account @leoandcici. In fact it was through her wonderful account that I decided to contact her and ask her to help me with our house and our office. I just knew from looking everyday at her account that she would get my style and sense of colour.
I always love @evachen212 …….She is my dream Laura Chambers cashmere wearer. I absolutely love her sense of style, fun and honest account of her family life. Her children Ren and Tao are hilarious and I love her husband Tom's love of granola !!
A fashion account that I love is @blaireadiebee . The daily amazing outfits and wonderful clash of colour and pattern always inspires me.
Finally I always find @voguewilliams account inspiring. She is such a wonderful supporter of Irish fashion including myself and has such a wonderful sense of style and of what works on her and a great work ethic which I admire hugely.
Love Eva also! That mint @mollygoddard dress!
SO- what colour combinations are you loving at the minute ?
Colour combos Im loving at the moment …..umm …..thats easy……Lilac and mint green, lilac and moss green, lilac and emerald……can you see a theme ???
Favourite alcoholic drink ?
also easy... Dingle gin and Indian Fever Tree Tonic.
How very specific of you Laura!
Are you minimalist or maximalist ?
Maximalist…..In fact after meeting and chatting to Elaine from Leo and Cici she went away and came back and presented her plans for our house. The theme was Joyful Maximalism which I think sums up my instinctual style perfectly. This was a temporary issue as my husband revealed to me after the presentation that he was a minimalist ! : )
Best /worst advice you got from your parents ?
Best advice my mum ever gave me is a simple one but is effective……do your best ! I always try to do my best in all aspects of my life. I give everything 100%…. no half measures…. Then I can have no regrets. And I think the best advice my Dad ever gave me is something also so simple and something I always try and remember….be nice !
